Always a Nigger #LunchBreakPoetry

You ever feel like you were stuck in a nightmarish reality? I’d call it the Twilight Zone, but after a while even weird shit normalizes, and you, even you’ll become numb to the sensation of the bear trap digging flesh away from bone once you just accept that you’re caught.

Every once in a while you’ll see an Always Nigger try to escape his impending niggergedom. Go to the “weed these broke niggas out” schools and excel at outdated government curriculum. Fall in love with and marry a non-black woman, not because black isn’t beautiful, but because that imagery isn’t connected to the “American Dream.” Complete assimilation. And still, Always a Nigger.

“CAUSE I AM, WHATEVER YOU SAY I AM. IF I WASN’T THEN WHY WOULD I SAY I AM? IN THE PAPPER, THE NEWS, EVERYDAY I AM. I DON’T KNOW. IT’S JUST THE WAY I AM.” #AlwaysNigger

Can’t blame these Always Niggers though. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down, and nobody understands that more than an Always Nigger. Still can’t help but feel like I’m lying to the little ones when I tell them to pull up their pants, don’t sell drugs, go to school and do well. For what, so they can become an Always Nigger, and silently suffer for acceptance?

“Hey there little black kid. Do everything you’re supposed to do so you can fit in. Never talk about racism, ever. Historic black oppression, don’t even mention it. They’ll never understand the lasting effects of hundreds of years of race breeding, and even if they did, why admit to it? No, no, no, if there is any hope for you at all little black kid, never mention any of that. Don’t get yourself blackballed in a white world. Do yourself a favor and disconnect completely from black culture. Drink Starbucks, and like it. Rub off your dark skin with bleach if you can. Do whatever it takes to become an Always Nigger.”

*This is dedicated to my brothers and sisters stuck in urban war zones doing everything they can to make it out, only to find a world at large that doesn’t accept them. I feel your pain, your loneliness. You do not struggle alone…my Always Niggers.
